The most common ways to anchor
a virtual world in our world with AR

Location on or around printed material

When defining a visual target in advance, which the camera of the mobile phone must see in order for the experience to be displayed, it is called image tracking. This way of placing elements works really well with, for example, roll-ups, posters, and wall murals. It typically works by scanning the QR code, which is also printed on the physical material, after which the experience appears on or around it. The experience is now anchored to the physical material, and one can move around it and possibly interact with it. The size of the virtual experience will always be the same in relation to the physical material.

Placement on an arbitrary surface

With this method, the mobile phone maps a surface via the camera on which the virtual experience can be placed. This could be, for example, a tabletop or a floor. The size of the visual experience varies depending on the size of the surface viewed by the camera at the beginning of the experience.

Placement over a larger area

With this method, you can place entire virtual houses in correct size at a precise location defined by GPS coordinates, allowing you to explore both outside and inside the house. It is well-suited for navigation, treasure hunts, and general visualization. The method is called geospatial computing and combines GPS with tracking of the surroundings using the camera, enabling the placement of virtual elements over a larger area. It can work indoors, but GPS precision can be challenging if there is a lot of concrete, for example.

360 experience

This method uses the mobile phone’s gyroscope to place a virtual world all around the user, creating a fully panoramic and engaging experience. Users can look around in any direction and interact with virtual objects overlaid on the real world. Enhanced with multi-sensory integration and contextual information overlays, 360 AR is used in various applications such as virtual tours, training, and collaborative workspaces. This technology provides personalized, dynamic interactions, offering rich, immersive experiences that blend the virtual and real worlds seamlessly. It can be used to experience 360-degree photos and videos, as well as for games or experiences in a completely virtual world.
